Which are better, baggies or spandex?
Baggy shorts have a liner of spandex in them, so in fact they are both spandex; the baggy part is just for show. Baggy shorts look more casual and are the trend among gravity riders. The shorts gravity riders use normally go down to the knee and have logos all over'em.

My opinion of baggy shorts are that they are pointless, they are more likely to get caught on the seat, they flap around in the wind and they are hotter on summer days. They have no performance benefits and they cost more. When I see people wearing baggy shorts I think to my self “who is that guy trying to impress” because baggy shorts are just for looks and are a poor investment in my opinion. If you are doing casual riding and want to look more casual you can always wear a pair of shorts over the top of regular spandex and get the same effect.
I'm sure gravity rides must have reasons or excuses to wear baggy shorts but unfortunately i don't know very many gravity riders to get an opinion. i do remember looking through at pics from the DH world championships and alot of guys were wearing skin siuts over their protective gear. so i know at least some gravity rides opt to stay away from spandex.

Indeed. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing baggy pants are the same since they usually have a liner.
But by the same logic, one could conclude that anything beyond slim-fitting underwear is pointless in -almost- any situation.
If you can ride single track all day, and not come across another soul; I say go for it. But personally I don't like to leave my junk all hanging out while my buddies and I are deciding which line or trail to take. I hope for the sake of all that is good with humanity that my buddies stay away from openly wearing spandex, too.
"Baggies" also offer places to carry things. They are not as hot as one would (the only thing keeping heat in is the liner anyway), and unless you're riding at competition levels, you'd have to be a pretty brutal rider (or have REALLY baggy pants) to get them caught on your seat. I ride mostly DH and single track that leaves my arms with nice scrapes from the many thin trees and my shorts have yet to catch on anything.
